Cities With The Greatest Potential For Natural Disasters In The World

Swiss Re, a global reinsurance company, has recently been analyzing the potential for natural disasters for the 616 largest cities in the world. Reinsurance company that analyzes each city based on the potential of the respective cities affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and floods.

For any kind of natural disaster, Swiss Re designing extreme weather scenarios where the defence fails so that human casualties and the economy could be huge.

Each city was ranked based on the effect of each scenario on the citizens, by combining data distribution and population estimates for each disaster vulnerability.

Natural disasters cause a number of disadvantages, ranging from loss of life, injuries, evacuations, homes were damaged or destroyed, until the people who will not be able to access their workplace.

The following cities with the greatest potential for natural disasters in the world :
  • Tehran, Iran

Population potentially affected as many as 15.6 million people. Tehran is located in one of the most dangerous fault lines in the world, namely the North Anatolian fault. The entire population of the city is prone to earthquakes.
  • Los Angeles, United States

Population potentially affected as many as 16.4 million people. Los Angeles, like California, is situated along the San Andreas Fault. It makes the city became one of the most earthquake-prone places in the world. A total of 14.7 million people live at risk of an earthquake at a particular time.
  • Shanghai, China

Population potentially affected as many as 16.7 million people. Shanghai, the most populous city in China, located in the Yangtze River delta, making it susceptible to flooding. In addition, the city is also susceptible of storms and hurricanes. A long coastline and the large volume of flowing water is also a threat to the city.
  • Kolkata, India

Population potentially affected as many as 17.9 million people. Kolkata is located near the largest river delta in the world, which made the city vulnerable to flooding every year.

Drainage systems that are older than 140 years, is currently only able to accommodate fewer than half of the city. Cyclones, tsunamis, and hurricanes are also a threat to the city.
  • Nagoya, Japan

Population potentially affected as many as 22.9 million people. Many large cities in Japan are located in the path of the ring of fire, a series of active fault lines, 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur at this point. Tsunami poses the biggest risk Nagoya.
  • Jakarta, Indonesia

Population potentially affected as many as 27.7 million people. Lack of planning exacerbates the effects of natural disasters. It is rooted phenomenon that occurs in Jakarta.

As the rainy season arrives, the town is less providing drainage - and the fact that 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level, causing the city is often flooded.

  • Osaka-Kobe, Japan

Population potentially affected as many as 32.1 million people. In 1995, a major earthquake devastated the Hanshin Osaka-Kobe which killed more than 6,000 people and caused losses of US $ 100 billion.

  • Pearl River Delta, China

  • Manila, Philippines

  • Tokyo-Yokohama, Japan

Population potentially affected as many as 57.1 million people. Tokyo-Yokohama region prone to natural disasters i.e. earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and tsunamis. Nearly 80 percent of the population affected by the earthquake prone. In addition, Tokyo is located in the active faults in the Pacific so it is at risk of a tsunami.
